Launched on June 2009, ASPEC is a regional patent work-sharing programme among nine participating ASEAN Member States (AMS) IP offices, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. ASPEC operates in the English language and is free of charge, notwithstanding the fees for local search and examination.


To share search and examination results between the participating IP offices and thus allow applicants in participating countries to obtain corresponding patents in a faster and more efficient manner. 

Key Things to Note

A duly completed ASPEC Request Form shall be accompanied by a copy of the search report and the examination report (“minimum documents”) of a corresponding application from the first IP Office.

The ASPEC Request Form may be accompanied by a claim correspondence table showing relatedness of the claims examined in the corresponding application to the claims in the current application, a copy of the written opinion(s) and the list of prior art, if available (“additional documents”).

The ASPEC Request Form may be filed at any time before the final decision of grant or refusal.

All subsequent correspondences with IPOS must be marked with the phrase “ASPEC requested”.

The documents must be accompanied by an English translation if they are not originally in English, at the time of filing the ASPEC Request Form.
