Advancing IP Capacities Internationally with WIPO and the GCC Region Collaborations

Posted on 09 May 2025

As Singapore’s leading centre for intellectual property (IP) education and capability development, IPOS International’s IP Academy has expanded its international collaborations to foster intellectual property (IP) capacity building and knowledge exchange across global regions. Among these partnerships, the collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Academy stands out as a cornerstone of IPOS International’s international engagement, aligning with its mission to empower enterprises and professionals through IP education and training.

Collaboration with WIPO

IPOS International has maintained a longstanding partnership with WIPO Academy. The collaboration with WIPO Academy was made even stronger with the signing of a 5 year MOU between IPOS International and WIPO during IP Week @ SG 2024, which enabled both parties to jointly develop and deliver of high-quality training programmes tailored to meet the evolving needs of professionals, policymakers, and enterprises across the globe.

Key highlights include:

  • WIPO-IPOS International Executive Programmes held in Singapore, welcoming participants from diverse countries to explore global IP trends, innovation ecosystems, and emerging challenges such as AI and sustainability. This is the second time we are collaborating with WIPO Academy which has seen good feedback from trainers and participants alike.
  • Patent Analytics (PA) reports where the PA team within IPOS International’s Search Examination and Analytics (SEA) unit works with WIPO to produce PA report as per request. The most recent was the Southeast Asia (SEA) Patent Landscape report that looks at driving SDGs through tech innovation. Through these efforts, the Academy has played an active role in supporting WIPO’s mission of democratizing access to IP knowledge and building a global cadre of IP professionals equipped to navigate an increasingly intangible economy.

Engagement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC)

Besides WIPO, the Academy also recognise the growing emphasis on innovation and diversification in the GCC economies, and we have worked with the GCC IP Training Center to support the region’s ambitions to transition from resource-based to knowledge-based economies through stronger IP ecosystems.

Notable initiatives include:

  • Virtual Customised training programmes for GCC government agencies and IP offices, focusing on IP policy implementation, patent and trademark examination practices to align with international standards.
  • In person Workshops covering IP commercialisation strategies, licensing models, and intangible asset management to equip Government officials to support enterprises with the tools to compete globally.
